John Deere D100 Series Lawn Tractor: How to Start and Stop the Engine

Not all tractors are created equally. Many vary, if only slightly, in the way that they are operated and maintained. Knowing the specifics of your machine will potentially save you time, frustration, and perhaps even unnecessary repair costs.

When parking the machine, stop on a level surface and disengage the mower blades. Lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

Starting

  • Step 1: Be sure that the bypass rod is pushed in.
  • Step 2: Sit in the seat.
  • Step 3: Make sure the mower is not engaged.
  • Step 4: Set the parking brake.
  • Step 5: Set the transmission shifter into the center slot if you have an automatic model.
  • Step 6: If the engine is cold, set the throttle/choke lever to the choke position. If the engine is warm, set the throttle/choke lever to the half-speed position.
  • Step 7: Turn the key to the start position and hold it there for no more than five seconds.
  • Step 8: When the engine starts, release the key and slowly move the choke lever down to the off position. If the engine does not start, wait 10 seconds and try again.
  • Step 9: Run the engine at high idle for a few minutes to let the tractor warm up.

Stopping

  • Step 1: Run the engine at high throttle without any load for a few seconds.
  • Step 2: Turn the key to the stop position.
  • Step 3: Remove the key.
  • Step 4: Set the parking brake.
