How to Change the Engine Oil of Your Troy-Bilt Pony Riding Lawn Tractor (Kohler Engine Model)

Keep your engine properly lubricated and protected by ensuring that your engine oil is both full and fresh. Refer to your engine’s manual for the proper amount and volume of oil that should be used.

Before servicing any power equipment, follow the safety instructions laid out in your owner’s manual. Make sure the equipment is completely stopped, cooled down, and that no parts are moving before attempting to service your equipment.

  • Step 1: Run the engine for a few minutes so it warms up and the oil flows more freely.
  • Step 2: Open the hood of your tractor.
  • Step 3: Find the oil drain port on the right side of the engine.
  • Step 4: Open the cap on the oil drain valve to expose the drain port.
  • Step 5: Remove the oil cap/dipstick from the filling tube.
  • Step 6: Push the oil drain hose onto the port and place the opposite end of the hose into a container that is appropriate for collecting at least 2.5 quarts of oil.
  • Step 7: Rotate the drain counter-clockwise and release to drain the oil.
  • Step 8: Once the oil has drained completely, push the end of the drain valve back in until it clicks into place.
  • Step 9: Cap the oil drain valve.
  • Step 10: Replace the oil filter.
  • Step 11: Refill with new oil.
