John Deere D100 Series Lawn Tractor: How to Install the Mower Deck

Installing a mower deck or any other attachment can be quite an intimidating task. Improper installation can lead to a number of different problems that can cause unnecessary wear and damage to your tractor. Proper instructions and knowledge of your machine will go a long way in making this process much easier.

When parking the machine, stop on a level surface and disengage the mower blades. Lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

  • Step 1: Park your equipment in a safe area.
  • Step 2: Set the attachment lift lever to the transport position.
  • Step 3: Place the mower deck under the tractor and wooden blocks under each side of the deck.
  • Step 4: Set the attachment lift lever to its lowest position.
  • Step 5: On each side, use washers and spring locking pins to fasten the rear draft arm and the adjustable lift link.
  • Step 6: Install the front draft rod into the mower deck bracket.
  • Step 7: Use a washer and spring locking pin to secure the front draft rod.
  • Step 8: Install the mower drive belt onto the engine drive sheave. For decks that are 48 and 54 inches, use a 15mm closed wrench or socket to rotate the idler sheave nut clockwise. This will move the idler sheave and tensioning arm toward the front of the tractor. Hold this while installing the belt onto the drive sheave.
  • Step 9: Remove the wooden blocks.
  • Step 10: On equipment using a 42 inch deck, attach the mower engagement drive cable by routing it under the mower belt and brake rod. Attach the cable spring to the idle sheave bracket.
  • Step 11: Pull out on the cable and align the black end of the cable with the slot on the bracket. Release the cable into the slot and lock it in place with a spring locking pin.
  • Step 12: Return the mower deck to your desired level.
