John Deere D100 Series Lawn Tractor: How to Remove and Install the Battery

If you’re working on or around the battery, don’t allow a wrench or any other object to touch both terminals at the same time. Be sure to remove any metal jewelry before working with the battery. Connect the positive terminal first to prevent sparking.

When parking the machine, stop on a level surface and disengage the mower blades. Lower the attachments all the way down, set the parking brake, and stop the engine. Take out the key and wait for the engine and attachments to completely stop moving before leaving the seat. Remove the spark plug or disconnect the negative battery cable before working on your tractor.

Removal

  • Step 1: Park your equipment in a safe area. Turn the engine off and let it cool.
  • Step 2: Find the battery.
  • Step 3: First, disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  • Step 4: Move the red cover away from the positive battery terminal.
  • Step 5: Remove the positive (+) cable from the terminal.
  • Step 6: Take note of how the battery is positioned in the tray to help you seat the new battery correctly.
  • Step 7: Remove the battery.

Installation

  • Step 1: Put the new battery in the tray.
  • Step 2: Connect the positive (+) cable to the positive (+) terminal, then connect the negative (-) cable to the negative (-) terminal.
  • Step 3: Spread lubricant on the terminals to minimize corrosion.
  • Step 4: Place the red cover back over the positive (+) battery terminal
