How to Check and Clean the Air Filter on a Honda Trimmer

The air filter keeps debris from getting into your engine.

A clean air filter is vital to the proper function of your engine!!

Honda recommends that you check the air filter after each use,  clean the air filter after every 25 hours of use and that the air filter should be replaced after every 2 years or 150 hours of use.

To check the air filter:

Step 1:

Move the choke lever to the closed position to ensure that no dirt enters the engine

Step 2:

Squeeze the upper tabs at the top of the air filter cover together to release it and then flip the cover down to remove it

Step 3:

Check the foam air filter to be sure it is clean, oiled properly, and in good condition. If it is too dirty or damaged you will need to replace it, otherwise you can clean it as described below

Step 4:

Place the air filter into the air filter base, re-install the air filter by place the three base pegs into the three air filter holes. Slide the air filter over the pegs until the air filter is flush with the air filter base

To clean the air filter:

Step 1:

Remove the foam air filter from the air filter base

Step 2:

Using warm soapy water, clean the filter, and then rinse, or use nonflammable solvent to clean it

Step 3:

Squeeze the excess water from the filter and be sure that it has time to thoroughly dry

Step 4:

This filter needs to be oiled, so place it in a resalable plastic bag and pour roughly 1 oz. of clean engine oil, or Honda air filter oil into the bag. Seal the bag and knead the filter until the oil is evenly distributed on the air filter. Squeeze excess oil from the filter

Step 5:

Remove the oil filter from the bag

Step 6:

Using a moist rag wipe any dirt from around the air filter base and cover being sure to not let any dirt enter the carburetor

Step 7:

Re-install the foam air filter and the air filter cover

Be sure to check your owner’s manual for what air filter you should use and an exact maintenance schedule!
