How to Replace the Spark Plug of a Honda HRX/HRR Lawn Mower

A fouled spark plug can be the cause of a wide variety of small engine problems and frustrations. Frequently inspecting and, if needed, replacing your equipment’s spark plug will save you time and help keep your equipment running smoothly.

If you need to replace your spark plug, it’s important to be sure that you are using the correct one. Honda recommends that the NGK BPR5ES/7734 is used for HRX/HRR mowers.

  • Step 1: Stop the engine and allow it to cool before servicing or maintaining your mower.
  • Step 2: Disconnect the spark plug cap. Clean the area around the spark plug before replacing it.
  • Step 3: Remove the spark plug with a 13/16 inch spark plug wrench.
  • Step 4: Inspect the condition of the spark plug. If the electrodes are worn or if the insulator is excessively worn or damaged, the spark plug will need to be replaced.
  • Step 5: Use a proper gauge to measure the electrode gap of the spark plug. The gap should be 0.028 ~ 0.031 inches (0.7 ~ 0.8 mm). Correct it if needed by bending the side electrode.
  • Step 6: Install the new spark plug by hand.
  • Step 7: Tighten the spark plug with a 13/16 inch spark plug wrench once it is properly seated. If you’re using a new spark plug, tighten ½ turn after the spark plug is seated. If using your old spark plug, tighten 1/8 to ¼ turn after the spark plug is seated.
  • Step 8: Install the spark plug cap onto the spark plug.

As with any power equipment maintenance, be familiar with the safety and warranty information that can be found in your owner’s manual. Always consult your manual for details specific to your model.
