Cub Cadet XT Series Lawn Tractor: How to Change the Deck Belt

If your deck belt is worn or damaged, it will cause your mower to function poorly or not at all. Replacing a belt is a frightening yet often necessary task.

When changing a damaged or worn belt, inspect the entire deck for potential causes. For example, there may be an obstruction in the deck belt’s path that is rubbing against the belt and shredding it. A pulley could be loose, causing the belt to stretch or fall out.

Look here for other potential signs of belt problems.

  • Step 1: Remove the cutting deck.
  • Step 2: Take a picture of how the belt is routed so that you have a guide for the installation of the new belt.
  • Step 3: Loosen the hardware on both idler pulleys.
  • Step 4: Remove the belt from the idler and spindle pulleys.
  • Step 5: Use the picture you took in step 2 to route the new belt.
  • Step 6: Tighten the idler pulleys and remount the spindle covers if they were removed.
  • Step 7: Reinstall the mower deck. As you do this, make sure the belt stays properly seated and routed.
  • Step 8: If your unit has a manual PTO, reinstall the engine pulley keeper rod.
  • Step 9: Pull the V side of the belt into the PTO pulley.
  • Step 10: Hold the belt and the pulley together. Rotate the pulley to the left until the belt is rolled fully into the PTO pulley.
